Getting To Know Our Summer Seminarian
Dear Parishioners,
My name is Sam (o Samuel para mis hispanohablantes). I just finished my second year of seminary at John Paul II in DC (right around the corner from the Basilica and Catholic University in Brookland), and I’m at the parish until early July! I’m originally from Silver Spring, but my home parish is St. Jerome’s (where Fr. Matt Fish was transferred last summer!).
I’ve been Catholic my whole life, but never ever did I expect to be in seminary. I dated, I got a degree in accounting and my CPA. I worked for several years, but something was missing. On a whim, I decided to go on the annual Archdiocese men’s discernment retreat (primarily to check off the “discernment” box, if we’re being honest). But through it, I came to realize how much a good priest pours himself out for his people, especially through the sacraments, and how he is “all things to all men,” in the words of St. Paul. So that has led me to seminary to explore that call from the Lord more!
It’s been a treat to meet so many of you already; if we haven’t met, please introduce yourself after Mass one day. I look forward to being with you and praying with you for the next six weeks. I’m especially looking forward to our Corpus Christi procession on June 6 and our Holy Hour and Mass for vocations on June 12. God bless you and thank you for sharing your parish with me!

¡Hola! Me llamo Sam. Acabo de terminar mi segundo año de seminario en John Paul II en Washington, D.C., ¡y estaré en la parroquia hasta principios de julio! Soy originalmente de Silver Spring, pero mi parroquia de origen es St. Jerome’s (¡donde el Padre Matt Fish fue transferido el verano pasado!).
Nunca esperaba terminar en el seminario. Tuve relaciones de noviazgo y trabajé varios años en contabilidad pública, pero sentía que algo faltaba. Fue durante un retiro de discernimiento con la Arquidiócesis que llegué a darme cuenta de cuánto un buen sacerdote se entrega por completo a su pueblo, especialmente a través de los sacramentos, y de cómo llega a ser “todo para todos”, en las palabras de San Pablo. ¡Y eso fue lo que me llevó al seminario para seguir explorando ese llamado del Señor!
Ha sido una alegría conocer a muchos de ustedes; y si todavía no nos conocemos, por favor preséntense después de misa algún día. Espero con entusiasmo poder acompañarlos y rezar con ustedes durante las próximas seis semanas. Estoy especialmente emocionado por nuestra procesión de Corpus Christi el 6 de junio y nuestra Hora Santa y Misa por las vocaciones el 12 de junio.

Bonjour à tous ! Je m’appelle Sam. Je viens de terminer ma deuxième année de séminaire à John Paul II à Washington, D.C., et je serai dans la paroisse jusqu’au début du mois de juillet ! Je suis originaire de Silver Spring, mais ma paroisse d’origine est St. Jerome’s (où le père Matt Fish a été muté l’été dernier !).
Je ne m’attendais jamais à entrer au séminaire. J’ai eu des relations amoureuses et j’ai travaillé pendant plusieurs années dans la comptabilité publique, mais il manquait quelque chose. C’est lors d’une retraite de discernement avec l’archidiocèse que j’ai réalisé à quel point un bon prêtre se donne entièrement pour son peuple, spécialement à travers les sacrements, et comment il devient « tout à tous », selon les paroles de saint Paul. C’est ce qui m’a conduit au séminaire pour approfondir davantage cet appel du Seigneur !
Cela a été une joie de rencontrer déjà beaucoup d’entre vous ; si nous ne nous sommes pas encore rencontrés, n’hésitez pas à venir vous présenter après la messe un de ces jours. Je me réjouis d’être avec vous et de prier avec vous pendant les six prochaines semaines. J’attends particulièrement avec impatience notre procession de la Fête-Dieu le 6 juin ainsi que notre Heure Sainte et Messe pour les vocations le 12 juin.

Xin chào mọi người! Tên tôi là Sam. Tôi vừa hoàn tất năm thứ hai tại chủng viện John Paul II ở Washington, DC, và tôi sẽ phục vụ tại giáo xứ cho đến đầu tháng Bảy! Tôi nguyên quán từ Silver Spring, nhưng giáo xứ quê nhà của tôi là St. Jerome’s (nơi cha Matt Fish đã được thuyên chuyển đến vào mùa hè năm ngoái!).
Tôi chưa bao giờ nghĩ rằng mình sẽ vào chủng viện. Tôi đã từng hẹn hò và làm việc trong ngành kế toán công trong nhiều năm, nhưng tôi cảm thấy vẫn còn thiếu điều gì đó. Chính trong một kỳ tĩnh tâm phân định với Tổng Giáo phận mà tôi nhận ra một linh mục tốt lành hy sinh và tận hiến cho giáo dân của mình biết bao, đặc biệt qua các bí tích, và như lời thánh Phaolô nói, ngài trở nên “mọi sự cho mọi người.” Điều đó đã dẫn tôi đến chủng viện để tiếp tục khám phá tiếng gọi mà Chúa dành cho tôi!
Thật là một niềm vui khi được gặp gỡ rất nhiều người trong anh chị em; nếu chúng ta chưa gặp nhau, xin hãy đến giới thiệu sau Thánh lễ vào một dịp nào đó nhé. Tôi mong được ở cùng và cầu nguyện với anh chị em trong sáu tuần tới. Tôi đặc biệt mong chờ cuộc rước lễ Mình Thánh Chúa vào ngày 6 tháng Sáu và giờ Chầu Thánh Thể cùng Thánh lễ cầu cho ơn gọi vào ngày 12 tháng Sáu.
